The A-Z of traditional Zulu life, packed into one exhilarating day. We make our way up the lush KwaZulu-Natal north coast, through sugarcane fields and into the tropical beauty of Zululand and the nKwalini Valley. Atop a hill overlooking the uMhlatusi River, Shaka's birthplace, stands the largest Zulu kraal in all of Zululand. It was built on the set of the film Shaka Zulu and far from lying dormant, today it's a very much alive museum. Here you'll learn all about the culture and traditions of Zulus and witness the skill and artistry that goes into building their huts, making pottery, brewing beer and crafting bead-work and baskets. Sample the unusual beer, visit the isangoma (witchdoctor), enjoy the grace and energy of the Zulu dancers and then tuck into a delicious lunchtime feast.

Hluhluwe Game Reserve

Spend a day on safari in the magical Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal. This huge, well-managed reserve is home to 84 species of game and an impressive 425 different types of birds, at last count! It is also famous for its rhino conservation, as avid watchers of the Discovery channel will know. The rest of the 'Big Five' gang are also here, along with cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, blue wildebeest, spotted hyena and wild dog. The tour includes game drives throughout the day and lunch at Hilltop Camp, which has incredible views over the reserve.

Drakensberg World Heritage Tour

We arrive at the World Heritage Site of Giant's Castle in the central Drakensberg (Dragon Mountains) after a scenic three-hour drive from Durban, in time for refreshments (own account). We then set off to discover the area's treasures on foot, our round-trip three-kilometre hike taking us to the caves adorned with the Bushmen's legacy: enigmatic paintings dating back 2000 years (average level of fitness required). After a guided tour of the paintings, we reward our efforts with a hearty lunch before returning to Durban via the Midlands Meander route, with its many craft and farmer markets.

Sani Pass/Lesotho Tour

We make an early start, meandering through the rolling green hills of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and on to the little town of Himeville. Here, we board a 4x4 vehicle, the only means by which to tackle the steep Sani Pass. At the top lies a remote border post -passports are essential - and beyond that, the Kingdom of Lesotho. We visit a traditional Sotho village and then enjoy lunch at the Sani Top Chalet, which has incredible views of the pass, before making our way back down the mountain.

Isandlwana & Rorke's Drift

Relive the horror of the two most famous Anglo-Zulu War battles. Visit the eerie battlefield of Isandlwana, where British troops were massacred by the Zulu army in 1879, then continue to Rorke's Drift, where a handful of British soldiers heroically held a mighty Zulu regiment at bay, a battle made famous by the movie 'Zulu'. The tour winds through some of the most spectacularly beautiful scenery in KwaZulu-Natal. After a full day's touring, we return to Durban in the early evening.
