Welcome to
East London, this site will help you find information on
where to stay and
what to do
in East London
One of South Africa’s most
pleasant residential cities, East London is a reputed family holiday
destination. It has a huge surf and spectacular bay. East London is built on
the banks of the Buffalo River and is the only South African river harbour
of commercial importance. It is the export centre for the district forming
the border area of the Cape Province and is most conveniently situated to
handle cargo of the Orange Free State Goldfields and the extensive area’s of
the Ciskei and Transkei.

From a historical view, early
inhabitants, the San, are responsible for the rock art in the area. The
strange and musical names of some of the rivers and mountains are the legacy
of the Khoi. Xhosa speaking people were already here when the Trek Boers
and Europeans settlers arrived in the area. Their arrival triggered a
series of Frontier Wars and remnants of many of the old fort sites still
remain as mute testimony of the early struggle for land. The many German
names of local towns and villages attest to the presence of German speaking
groups who arrived here in 1850’s.
