Amakhala Game Reserve and Accommodation Eastern Cape

Only 45 minutes drive east of Port Elizabeth,
Amakhala Game Reserve and Accommodation in the Eastern Cape
is easily accessible for any visitor to South Africa,
and it is surely a not-to-be-missed stop on
South Africa's famous "Garden Route".

Among the Frontier Settlers some five generations ago, our families settled in the Eastern Cape to farm sheep and cattle on the wild and often hostile Zuurveld. We are still here in the now historic and hospitable Frontier Country, only today our Private Game Reserve offers a wildlife experience that will capture your imagination, refresh your soul and help to conserve our natural heritage.

The haunting cry of the fish eagle echoes through the rugged krantzes, and the veld grass whispers with the roaming of Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Cheetah, Giraffe, Zebra and numerous other antelope. At Amakhala you can experience the delights of the African bushveld while on safari, bushwalk, river cruise or simply with a glass of wine from the veranda of your lodge.

Here you will also experience the warm hospitality of the settler family descendents who run The Heritage Collection of Game lodges, and you may discover some of our little "secrets"; like the prehistoric bushman burial ground, or the site of Africa's most ancient dinosaur fossil finds.

ABOUT US

The Amakhala Game Reserve began in 1999 as a joint conservation venture. Today, five independently owned lodges of The Heritage Collection, are all TGCSA Star Lodge accredited. The lodges are owner managed by the descendants of the original families who arrived here with the British settlers of 1820. The lodges offer various styles of accommodation, which include two gracious colonial homesteads, two classic bush lodges, an historic inn and a Settler farmhouse.

Amakhala Game Reserve is a unique conservation
initiative that allows animals to be re-introduced to the area where they once roamed freely and so making a contribution to the conservation of our natural heritage. The land was used to ranch sheep and cattle up to the turn of the century. The challenge has been to re-establish the original flora and fauna species to the area and to return the land to nature

The Safari Lodge
This intimate thatched lodge with its unique air-conditioned safari huts offers all the comforts of a luxury four star lodge and is an undisturbed retreat where you can regenerate your soul and tune into the sounds of nature.

Leeuwenbosch
The Country House on Leeuwenbosch caters for the whole family. We offer two family suites, baby sitting services and a children’s programme.

Shearer’s Lodge has been beautifully converted into four luxury en-suite rooms, three twins and one really special honeymoon suite and surrounded by indigenous gardens.

Woodbury Lodge
Guests are accommodated in five comfortably appointed stone-and-thatch sleeping lodges, each with air-conditioning and en-suite bathroom.

Reed Valley
Inn
Nestled in a farmyard, this historic lodge has 4 en-suite country rooms, which once provided rest and safety for the travelers on the mail wagon. Each room has a separate entrance on to a private patio. Children of all ages are welcome.

Bush Lodge
Built in the bush at the top end of an open valley in the reserve, each of the four rooms overlook a watering point with big sky views. All buildings are thatched roofs, tented walls and wooden floors.

Carnarvon Dale
This Settler farmhouse consists of, the Bottom House, and an elegantly restored early Edwardian cottage, the Top House. On offer is a choice of en-suite serviced bedrooms meeting three star grading requirements. A family suite is available on request. All rooms are B & B.
