MALARIA FREE - EASTERN CAPE -
SOUTH AFRICA Welcome to Shamwari Game Reserve, 25 000 hectares (61 000
acres) the malaria free, private game reserve situated in the Eastern Cape of
South Africa, has received numerous international awards, including the World's
Leading Conservation Company and Game Reserve for five consecutive years. It is
situated in verdant bush along the Bushmans River, halfway between Port
Elizabeth (45 minutes drive outside the city) and Grahamstown, a pleasant drive
from Cape Town, forming a natural extension to the famous Garden Route. Shamwari
is about conserving a vanishing way of life and is the realisation of one man's
dream, and the success of many people's passion. Steeped in Settler history, and
dating back to the time when a multitude of game roamed wild and free, the 20
000 hectare reserve boasts five eco-systems, thus enabling the support of many
forms of plant, animal and bird life. This is the ultimate African adventure and
conservation effort coupled with responsible tourism.
Conservation at Shamwari is about the management,
development and rehabilitation of the environment to create a sustainable
ecosystem through the implementation of fundamental conservation principals. The
conservation department at Shamwari has a highly effective team including a
qualified wildlife veterinarian, ecologist and environmentalist. The Wildlife
Department also boasts a breeding centre, an education centre and an
anti-poaching unit. To ensure the lasting sustainability of the reserve as an
ecosystem rich in biodiversity, the ecology department strives to protect and
where necessary to improve the environment. The Wildlife Department has received
the Global Nature Fund Award for Best Conservation Practice and Dr Johan Joubert,
our Wildlife Director, was voted one of South Africa's Top Ten Conservationists,
awarded by the Endangered Wildlife Trust.

By air:
Port Elizabeth Airport is only 50-70 minutes drive from Shamwari.
Transfers: Chauffeur driven vehicles are available on request.
By road from Port Elizabeth: Travel along the N2
towards Grahamstown - approximately 65kms. Take the Paterson
off-ramp (R342), continue for a further 7kms turning right at the
Shamwari sign.
Lobengula Lodge: Follow the N2 out of Port
Elizabeth until you reach the N2 / N10 cross over. Follow the N10 to
Paterson/Cradock bypassing Paterson. Travel for 11 km from Paterson
until you reach the Alicedale turn off. Turn right at the Lobengula
Lodge sign board and travel for a further 12 km on a gravel road.
Turn right at the Shamwari Gate and follow the sign boards to
Lobengula Lodge.
Eagles Crag and Bayethe.
Follow the N2 out of Port Elizabeth heading towards Grahamstown
bypassing the R342 turn off. Continue along the N2 until you reach a
sign board Eagles Crag and Bayethe on the Sidbury road. Turn left on
the gravel road and follow this road passing through the Kwantu gate
until you reach a T-junction. At the T-junction follow the sign
boards right to Bayethe and left to Eagles Crag.
Long Lee, Riverdene,
Bushmans River Lodge and Day Centre
Follow the N2 towards Grahamstown.
Take the turn-off towards Paterson on the R342 and travel 7 km up
the gravel road. Enter at the 1st gate for Riverdene, Bushmans River
Lodge and Day Centre. Enter at the 3rd gate for Long Lee.
