KAROO HEARTLAND SOUTH AFRICA
|
Welcome to the Karoo South
Africa
The Karoo ranges
from the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape and the Northern Cape. The term
Karoo is used to describe most of the interior of the old Cape Province
interior and covers almost one third of South Africa’s total area. It is
also called “semi dessert”. The population is sparse; off the main highways
you can drive for hours without seeing another car.
There is an
interesting history in the Karoo and signs are still to be found on several
places. The San and Khoikhoi roamed the region and hunted vast herds of
antelope. They have left drawings and artefacts made out stone.
For some people
the Karoo means nothing more than flat hot roads and a long and boring trip
between Johannesburg and Cape Town. For others, however, the Karoo is one of
the most exhilarating regions in South Africa and very interesting for the
low budget traveller.
The Karoo ranges
from flat to mountainous. The mountains and hills change colour depending on
your proximity, the time of the day, or the weather. The towns are
historical and some of them have a wonderful architecture. Even the Karoo,
as dry as it seems to be, produces a fascinating flora of two sorts:
succulents and woody shrubs.
The temperature on
the day is hot, average 33 degrees, but can go a lot higher. The moment the
sun sets, however, the temperature plummets. In winter, frosts are common
and daytime temperatures average a pleasant 18 degrees. The best time to
visit is spring and autumn when the weather is fine and the day temperatures
are in the mid-20s.
