in Port Alfred

Port Alfred is an interesting
town in transition between being a genuine fishing village and an up market
holiday resort with a huge artificial island development. With its riverside
setting, 1820 atmosphere and favorable climate, Port Alfred, is perhaps the
most charming of the seaside resorts of the Eastern Cape Province. The town
is sited on the banks of the beautiful Kowie River estuary.
Port Kowie dates from 1821, in
which year the schooner Elizabeth crossed the bar and entered the river. In
1825 the place was renamed Port Francis after Francis Somerset, the wife of
the frontier commandant, Colonel Somerset. It 1860 it was again renamed Port
Alfred, second son of Queen Victoria.
Many attempts have been made to
make Port Alfred a successful port but is has never worked as a proper port.
